How do you Take your Tracfone Off of Roam?

Roaming in your local area, one of the arch enemy of many Tracfone owners. So how exactly do you take your phone off of roam? Short answer is you really can't without contacting customer service that is. So which phones roam and why do it happen? Roaming in your local area usually happens in fringe coverage areas. That is, areas that are in the further reaches of the carrier Tracfone assigned you. It can also happen in dead coverage areas. There are two main reasons why this happens.

1. You entered the wrong zip code when activating the phone or maybe you entered another zip code hoping to get different choices of phone model. If you are thinking about a Tracfone, use this tool How to tell which Technology Tracfone will assign for my zip". This handy tool will tell you what the technology for that zip is and what the possible carriers will be.

2. Tracfone has no inventory in your zip code so they assigned you the closest number possible. This is a rear case but does happen. It is more common during the Christmas season when people are activating a lot of phones. So if you are thinking about getting a Tracfone, buy one before Chrsitmas!

In either case, you will need to contact customer service. For reason #1, they will probably swap out your phone. For reason #2, customer service will try to get their Line Activations department to find you a good number.

Can I Use A different Carriers Sim Card on My Tracfone?

This is one of the biggest questions I seem to find when it comes to Tracfone. The answer to that is NO. You cannot use a Tracfone sim on your XX carrier phone and you cannot use your XX carrier sim on your Tracfone. The reason why you cannot do this is because Tracfones have special firmware that allow/disallow sims, track your minutes, allows you to add minutes and a few other things. So the only SIM that will work on a Tracfone is a Tracfone SIM. How about unlocking the phone? I do not have any experience with this, however, I do know it can be done. Don't think this will allow you to use a Tracfone using Tracfone service for free. It simply does not work that way. All unlocking will allow you to do is to use a different carrier sim on a Tracfone. This appears to be desirable since you can get a Tracfone for under $20. It should be noted that Tracfone subsidizes the phone costs for their customers so when you do this, you are technically stealing. Not that I am the moral police or anything, just thought I would point that out. That being said, I don't know what how much it will cost you to unlock a phone or who can do it. So what can you do if you already have a phone but want to use it as a Tracfone? Well, the only way to get Tracfone service is to buy a Tracfone. There are plenty of models that can be had for under 20 bucks so getting one is not expensive. Unfortunately, there is no other way. As I mentioned before, all Tracfones have Tracfone's proprietary firmware and there is no way to download it or install it on a non Tracfone phone.

How to determine the Technology Tracfone will Assign for Your Zip

I have noticed that one of the biggest questions is how to determine the technology for your area before ordering a Tracfone. Well, the hard way is to go to the Tracfone website and simulate a phone purchase without purchasing the phone. The problem is, Tracfone will not tell you 'Your technology is XXX and your carrier is XXX'. All you will get is a list of the phones for your area. Unless you do a little research you won't know what technology you are in. Fortuately there is a much easier way. I found a page where they bypassed all the annoying Tracfone prompts to get to the answer quicly and easily. What is my Tracfone Technology will tell you the technology your zip code is in. It will also tell you if your area is dual technology, that is if there is both GSM and CDMA. It will also narrow down the possible carrier choices. Unfortunately, there is no way to know the EXACT carrier for a given area (unless there is only one carrier obiously). You see, Tracfone ha preferred carriers for a given area. That is, they rather activate the phone with that carrier because they get the best rate. I know Bellsouth/Cingular now ATT used to be one so if you are in an ATT area you will probably get ATT. Another factor is that their line inventory also changes day to day, especially during high volume times like XMas . In other cases, it also depends on what retailer you buy the phone from. That is phones from Walmart will be activated with XX carrier while phones from Radio Shack will be activated with XX carrier whenever possible. So determining exactly which carrier you will get is not really possible. You can try calling customer service but last I checked, they couldn't even tell..... If you are determined to find out, another good resource is Howard Forum and I also found this page with lots of info, http://thejmart.com/tracfone.htm

How to get valid tracfone promo codes

If you are a Tracfone user then you already know the benefits of having prepaid service. One of the great things about Tracfone is that they offer their customers numerous bonus promo codes throughout the year. These are basically free minutes that you can get by simply entering a 5 digit code. Using such promo codes can, in many cases, lower your per minute costs by half or more per card. Tracfone usually offers these promotions in one of several ways. They can be found on their website, they are emailed to customers who provided their email, they can be found on print ads and they are sent via text message to a customer's phone. Now I have been a customer for over 3 years but have rarely received promos via email or text. I don't usually look at print ads and the promo codes on their website are usually for the higher denomination cards. So the question is where does a customer like myself find these promos? The answer is quite simple, on the internet of course! There are literally hundreds of promo codes floating around on various forums, sites and blogs. The problem with these though is that the majority are are usually expired. Fact is that operators don't update very often. They also have no way of validating them short of buying airtime. Finally, Tracfone is not in the business of giving away minutes so they are not likely to put out hundreds of valid codes at a time like many sites claim. So how do you find valid codes? Do you visit countless forums and blogs hunting them down? The answer is NO. You find a site that updates often and one that validates their codes.

That's easier said than done since site operators want to attract visitors cheaply and quickly. So many of them will throw up a bunch of useless codes. This doesn't mean a good site doesn't exist. In fact I just recently found the best promo code site thus far. Not only do they update EVERYDAY, they also validate using Tracfone's site so they are usually all valid codes. You won't find hundreds of useless codes but you will find just about ALL the valid codes available. They also have a nice little promo code checker where you can test all the codes you find. If you find one that's good they add to their DB so their db is always updating with VALID codes. So if you need good promo codes without the usual scavenger hunt, visit PrePrepaid.com more specifically, go directly to their Current Valid Tracfone Bonus Promo Codes. That being said, there are a few other good sources for promo codes. Here is a short list:
